Programme Outcomes
Student-Initiated Learning (SIL) empowers Boon Lay Secondary School students to take ownership of their learning while exploring their passions across the DREAMS domains:
Through SIL, students build essential future-ready competencies such as self-management, collaboration, problem-solving, innovation, and lifelong learning habits.
Description of Programme & Key Activities
SIL offers three tiers of learning experiences to cater to students’ interests, learning preferences, and levels of independence.
1. School-Curated Independent Learning
Students complete simple, safe, and engaging school-curated tasks at their own pace during Home-Based Learning (HBL). Activities are accessible via SIL MS Teams and the Student Learning Space (SLS).
Examples include:

Swift Playgrounds with Your iPad (Digital & Infotech)

Digital Science Experiments (Engineering, Maths & Science)

Active Arcade Movement Challenges (Sports)

Music in Singapore (Arts & Humanities)
These activities nurture curiosity, creativity, and confidence in independent learning.
2. School-Facilitated Peer Activities
Students may return to school during HBL to use school facilities and participate in guided, hands-on sessions that strengthen teamwork and practical skills.
Examples include:

Cricut & 3D printing projects in the Design Studio (Media & Design)

National Digital Explorer on Workforce Documents - Learn and Certify in the Computer Labs (Digital & Infotech)

Sports training sessions such as basketball, badminton, and Captain’s Ball (Sports)
These sessions help students deepen their interests while benefiting from school expertise and equipment.
3. Fully Student-Initiated Peer Activities
Students independently plan, organise, and carry out activities with their peers—encouraging leadership, responsibility, and collaboration.
Examples include:

Modern dance rehearsals (Relations & Business)

Student-led video production or photography projects (Arts & Humanities)

Outdoor activities such as volleyball or soccer (Sports)
This tier nurtures student agency and strengthens social-emotional skills.
SIL Digital Showcase
Each student documents and presents their learning at the annual SIL Digital Showcase. This celebration highlights creativity, personal growth, and peer inspiration while reinforcing reflection and communication skills. Through SIL, Boon Lay Secondary School develops well-rounded, self-directed learners who are ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.
